What color is Bordeaux? Bordeaux can be white, red, or even rosé! No wonder you may be confused. Bordeaux wines are generally blends, but not always.

There are many grapes permitted in Bordeaux, but the most common for red wines is Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The most common white grapes are Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Red wines from the left bank of the Gironde River tend to be mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. Red wines from the left bank tend to be mostly Merlot.

White Bordeaux is usually a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Semillon is a light thin skinned grape similar to Sauvignon Blanc. Semillon is also the primary grape of the white dessert wines from Bordeaux, the most famous of which is Sauternes and Barsac.
