The name “Submarine Canyon” is a reference to the deep underwater canyon located in the Monterey Bay that provides the ideal marine climate for growing premium Pinot Noir grapes. This flagship Pinot Noir is a pure representation of the coastal terroir in Monterey County. Ancient glacial soils made up of sand, gravel, limestone, and shale loam help create wine with bright acidity, vibrant fruit and mediumweight and texture.

Joyce Vineyards began as a chance planting by Francis Joyce in 1989 on a steep hillside in Carmel Valley, California. Francis’ son Russell Joyce, a second generation winemaker who grew up working amongst the vines at the family’s 6 acre estate, now owns and operates what has evolved into Joyce Wine Company.
Russell Joyce tells the stories of Monterey County’s unique terroir and showcases the area’s premier AVAs in a classic and transparent approach to winemaking. He utilizes this approach to create wines of purity and elegance while focusing on the local varietals grown throughout Monterey County and its surroundings.
Working closely with trusted local growers that focus on innovation and sustainability allows winemaker Russell Joyce to harvest solely after achieving physiological ripeness. This translates to transparent winemaking procedures in the cellar. With an aim for typicity and honesty in every wine produced in house, Joyce uses neutral fermentation and aging vessels to limit secondary influences on the fruit itself. The combination of diverse vineyard sites and minimal cellar practices produce expressive wines that represent a time and place in Monterey’s coastal climate. Joyce Wine Company generates approximately 10,000 cases annually with a primary focus on Burgundian varietals.
