Ghiaia Nera translates to “Black Gravel”, which represents the dark volcanic soils the region is known for. This 100% Nerello Mascalese bottling is a celebration of a younger style of the wine, as the vines range in age from eight to ten years old. The vineyards are in Randazz on the northern side of Mount Etna. The vines grow with northern-facing aspect, on ancient vineyard sites with shallow soil on a seabed of sediment scattered with stones and organic matter. After harvest the grapes are pressed and 20% undergo malolactic fermentation in barrel, while the remaining are in stainless steel. The wine is aged for 24 months in Slavonian oak casks, then another year in bottle before release.

Since 1830, Tasca d’Almerita has been an expression of tradition and innovation in the wine industry both in Sicily and across Italy. They have conducted extensive studies within each of the island’s territories to discover the greatest potential of each individual area. Today, the family operates five farms (Tenuta) boasting the most suitable lands for wine production in Sicily. These five estates in five territories allow the Tasca famliy a unique way to interpret wine across the entire region. Among the five are Tenuta Capofaro on Salina, Tenuta Whitaker on Mozia and Tenuta Tascante on Mt. Etna, Tasca d’Almerita is currently run by Count Lucio Tasca, along with his sons, Giuseppe, Vice President, and Alberto, CEO.

Located on the northeastern coast of Sicily, Mt. Etna is the tallest and most active volcano in Europe. A fascinating land, particularly fertile thanks to the numerous lava flows. The Etna DOC consists of small areas called districts and it represents an important portion of the wine-growing industry in Sicily. The area is located within the Etna Park, a protected natural area, to be safeguarded as much as possible. Here, it is possible to ski while overlooking the sea, a unique and breathtaking view.

The Tasca family currently owns four parcels, located in the contrade of Pianodario and Sciaranova in Randazzo, and Rampante and Grasà in Castiglione. (A contrada is a small subdivision of a commune, based on various defining criteria such as elevation, cultural/historical significance, or the age of past lava flows.) The vineyards are mostly at elevations of 2,450 to 2,600 feet (750–800 meters) on the 11,000-foot mountain. All are certified as sustainable under SOStain, a Sicilian-based program that rates wineries and vineyards based on their impact on the environment, in conjunction with the Italian Ministry of the Environment’s VIVA indicators of sustainability. The grapes planted at the estate include the most notable, Nerello Mascalese, as well as a small quantity of the white, Carricante.
