Gotsa, Takveri, Method Ancestrale, Natural Sparkling Wine, Georgia 2017

This wine is essentially a pet-nat and they are changing the label to reflect this more popular term. Although a rose, it is very dark in color and could almost be considered a sparkling red. It is slightly sweet, slightly funky, and has a hint of volatile acidity. This is a bubbly for someone into pet-nat on the funkier side. Because of the noticeable tannins, this is probably best with some hearty food.

Wine is a major part of Georgian heritage. Georgia has many endemic varieties of grape – over 500. The warm climate and moist air rising from the Black Sea provides perfect conditions for the cultivation of grape vines. Their Asureti 4 ha., biodynamic vineyard is located between village “Marabda” and “Asureti” 550 mt. from see level, in the territory of “Algeti National Park”. Distance between the vineyard and winery is around 10 km. They have planted 22000, 14 different varieties of original Georgian grapes. The vineyard and winery is operated by “Demeter” biodinamic standard and will be certified as of 2018 harvest. From 2018 on they also got organic certification by “Kiwa BSC” GE-BIO-141. Their wines are not fined and are free of any additives and they are fermented spontaneously. They only use burned sulfur when cleaning the vessels (Kvevri’s) no sulfur powder is added to the wines.
